A.A.I. Congress and Artistic Fencing World Championship 2008

September 5th to the 7th

A.A.I. Representative, Prof. Mike Joseph

As you can see in the programme below the A.A.I. is holding a Congress during the weekend of the Artistic Fencing World Championship. All affiliated and paid up National Academies are entitle to attend and all have a vote. Voting power for each N.A. depends on the number of Masters registered and paid for. We have 37 registered Masters. The Committee decided that to emphasise the point of single and two weapon Masters we would not register these members this year with the A.A.I.

The voting system at Congress is as shown below, thus our vote will count 2

    · from 1 to 20 members = one vote
    · from 21 to 40 members = two votes
    · from 41 to 60 members = three votes
    · from 61 to 100 members four votes
    · more than 100 members = five votes.

I have to say that I am uncertain of the turn out for the event and the Congress.

I also have problems with members of the A.A.I. Committee in that some do not respond to e-mails. The AAI treasurer is the main culprit here. It appears that he will not be attending the whole event, he has other commitments. I have requested balance sheets from him. Hopefully we will get these before the Congress.

At this Congress I shall endeavour to put and get accepted the Committee proposals I put last year.

    These include;
    · Full recognition of single and two weapon Masters,
    · Recognition of our Academy Coach Education system and full approval of this by the A.A.I. as a recommended system. This will, I am certain, be requested by other N.As.
    · A new A.A.I. membership application procedure,
    · Stage Fight Academies acceptance into the A.A.I.,

All of these topics were agreed at last year’s committee meeting in Brussels. I am hoping that they will go through without to much debate at Congress.

Communications remains a major problem with some N.As never responding and known contacts changing their e-mail address and not notifying anyone.

We have tried to set up a news sheet, no contributions received so no news sheet. This remains ongoing so any item worthy of publication will be happily received. Send it to me please.

In 2 year it will be time for the next Fencing Masters World Championship. At the present time we have no venue. Malta, a new member, did volunteer but this has now fallen through.

We are now seeking an alternative. I hope that this may be resolved at this coming Congress. I will keep you informed.

Artistic Fencing World Championships 2008

This year sees the return of the Artistic Fencing World Championship. This event draws stage fight entries from many of our fellow National Academies and is usually well supported.

The A.A.I. (www.escrime.org) has overall control of the event and asks member National Academies for volunteers to stage this 4 yearly event.

This year our colleagues in Italy are staging the event in San Marino. Please forgive any grammatical errors in the following welcoming article from the President of the Italian Academy.

The event website is www.maestridischerma.it/sanmarino2008/enindex.html

This event is a stage fight competition with action from all the eras of sword play including a fantasy category for those wishing to utilise this area. There are rules and a copy is on the Championship website, make sure you select the English version, unless your Italian is very good.

Rehearsals are on the 6th. and the championship is on the 7th. Full details on the website.
