A Change For The Better. For many coaches, spectacular success of their pupils in competition occurs infrequently. But there are other rewards to coaching. Recently I have heard this story - one which gives me lots of satisfaction - from the parents of several of my young pupils.
A parent recently told me how he felt about the trek around competition circuit with his daughter. It is like two circles of friends. His offspring immediately meets up with other competitors on the circuit, many who have become friends, whilst at the same time, Dad is meeting his fencing friends, probably the parents of his daughter’s friends. So I guess we are not just asporting organisation but a social contact group as well. When I first started coaching a fellow coach stressed to me that you should never ignore the parents of your fencers. They support their children and they support you, the Coach. This “Social Club” of parents provides our young fencers with the means to enjoy our sport and also provides us, the coaches, with the enthusiastic fencers we all love to see enjoying fencing.
I seem to remember when I was young, competitions were not such friendly places. Some things do change for the better.
Coaching Workshop I am still looking for “Presenters” for the Coaching Workshop. If you have a favourite topic that you would like to share please get in touch. If you have a topic that you would like more information about, get in touch and I will try to find a speaker to help at the seminar, The likely date will be in July 08.
Pitman Award We have had a couple of nominations, but, unfortunately, they were regarding coaches who were not members of the Academy. Please get in touch as soon as possible if you know a worthy coach, who is an Academy member.
AGM 2008 It may seem a long way off, but please make a note in your diary (see page 11). OUR meeting, that is the meeting for “Members Other Than Masters”, starts at 0930 and that is the chance for most of us to say what we feel and ask the questions which may be a bit embarrassing to ask at the main AGM. It was at that meeting last year that the idea of a coaching seminar was first mentioned. So you can see it does get results. At each AGM, it is the time for the members to choose their representative on the committee. When I took the job on I said I would consider it for 3 years, we are now at the end of my 4th year. If you want a change, I will not be offended. More importantly, if you have ideas that you want to pursue, put yourself forward.
